IrsiCaixa
Strategy Web
IrsiCaixa is a health research institute specialising in immunology, HIV/AIDS and infectious diseases, internationally recognised and promoted by the “la Caixa” Foundation and the Department of Health of the Government of Catalonia. The project aimed to develop a new institutional website capable of improving user experience, facilitating content management and projecting a digital image aligned with its level of scientific excellence.
The challenge: transforming scientific complexity into a clear digital experience
The previous website presented two main limitations: evident usability and navigation issues, as well as technical constraints that made content updates difficult for the communications team.
The challenge was to reorganise a large volume of scientific and institutional information into a clear, intuitive and accessible structure for diverse audiences — researchers, institutions, media and the general public — without losing scientific rigour or depth.
Additionally, the new website needed to become a benchmark within the biomedical research sector, conveying innovation, credibility and international projection.
The solution: content architecture, UX/UI and editorial-driven art direction
The project began with the definition of a new content architecture designed to organise information logically and improve navigation. Based on this structure, we developed wireframes to validate the user experience and ensure immediate accessibility to content.
We then approached art direction and visual design with the aim of creating a distinctive digital identity within the scientific sector. The design embraces an elegant and clean aesthetic, adopting an editorial approach where white space enhances readability and introduces visual sophistication.
The combination of sans-serif and serif typography allowed us to balance scientific rigour with communicative expressiveness, while photographic direction was carefully curated to convey scientific excellence through both researchers and facilities.
The figure of Dr. Bonaventura Clotet, an internationally recognised scientific leader and key asset of the institute, was also visually integrated into the system to reinforce recognition and institutional presence.
Finally, we developed a digital identity guideline that gathers all visual criteria and resources required for the website to evolve consistently while remaining faithful to the original design.
Results: a digital platform aligned with scientific excellence
The new website positions IrsiCaixa as a contemporary and accessible research centre, significantly improving navigation, content understanding and the autonomy of the communications team in daily management.
The new digital identity strengthens the perception of scientific excellence, provides visual coherence and establishes a solid foundation for the future growth of the institute’s communication.
A project that demonstrates how institutional web design, art direction and digital strategy can transform a scientific platform into a clear, prestigious and internationally oriented communication tool.
