MedAlliance 100MPA is a European initiative promoted by the Institute of Marine Sciences (ICM–CSIC) aimed at strengthening 100 marine protected areas across the Mediterranean against the impacts of climate change before 2030.
At Ondeuev, we developed a comprehensive strategy, branding and digital communication project to provide the initiative with a clear, coherent and recognisable identity capable of connecting with scientific, institutional and social audiences at an international scale.
The challenge: communicating a complex European project to diverse audiences
MedAlliance 100MPA is a European research project led by scientist Joaquim Garrabou, who has spent years developing innovative protocols and tools to improve the management and climate adaptation of marine protected areas.
The main challenge was to transform a complex scientific project into a narrative that was understandable, accessible and engaging for diverse audiences: the scientific community, environmental managers, European institutions and the general public. The communication needed to convey scientific rigour while maintaining clarity and strong outreach capacity.
The solution: strategy, naming and visual identity for a European initiative
The project was structured in two complementary phases. First, we defined the overall communication strategy by identifying key audiences and building a clear, approachable narrative adaptable to multiple international contexts.
Based on this narrative, we developed the naming MedAlliance 100MPA, conceived to synthesise the collaborative nature and core objective of the initiative. We then created the visual identity, giving the project a distinctive personality through an expanded colour palette and a flexible pattern system designed to work across multiple formats.
The brochure became a central communication asset. It was designed as an interactive PDF capable of condensing the project’s value and scope into a visually strong, clear and easily shareable format.
Finally, we designed and developed the website, integrating all project elements into a coherent, accessible digital platform aligned with the scientific and environmental values of MedAlliance 100MPA.
Results: a coherent and scalable European communication tool
The project provides MedAlliance 100MPA with an integrated communication system that strengthens international visibility and facilitates the dissemination of its scientific and environmental objectives.
The new identity and digital platform enable consistent communication across channels, improve content understanding and consolidate a strong image among European institutions, scientific partners and the general public.
A comprehensive solution demonstrating how strategy, branding and digital design can transform scientific communication into a key tool for advancing European initiatives with real impact on the future of the Mediterranean.
